THE SURVEY ON NORTHERN IRELAND

Objectives:

• to check our stereotype of Northern Ireland was shared by lots of people, that of a cold, rainy country with an old industrial history,

• to make people realize that Northern Ireland has a lot to offer, just as we did,

• to make people want to get more information about Northern Ireland by visiting our blog.

The survey :

• We selected 14 photos from different websites (Office de Tourisme d'Irlande, Lonely Planet Northern Ireland,Titanic Stories...); the photos either represented “traditional” landscapes and buildings or modern buildings, sport activities etc.

• We asked teenagers from our previous schools (see the photos), from our present school (see the photos), and adults at The “Médiathèque” in Quimperlé (see the photos) what country or region of the world each photo made them think of. (The Mediatheque posted a short article about us on their site http://twitter.com/#!/mediatheque29/status/157092521653186561/photo/1 ;_)

• For the students in our school we couldn't interview, we organised an exhibition in the hall with the photos of the slide show and gave the answers 2 days later.

  Results of the survey :

- A total of 332 people have been interviewed in our previous schools, at our “Lycée” and at the Town Cultural centre.

- When showing the different photos, Great Britain and Ireland were most often quoted (43% of the answers) for photos 6,10,12,14,) which show a typical,/traditional image people from Brittany usually have of Ireland (Beautiful landscapes, buildings, whiskey distillery) but only 1% thought of Northern Ireland.

- More surprising was that only 4 people recognized the Giant's Causeway and only 2 knew it was in Northern Ireland. We even had problems convincing a man that it was a natural site, that it was not man-made! Nobody knew it was part of the National World heritage.

- Northern Ireland is little known as a modern, dynamic place : the photos showing sport activities were mainly linked to Australia, New Zealand or the USA (62%; the other answer was France). As for the photo showing the modern architecture of the Titanic Belfast museum, it was thought to have been taken in Dubaï, (52%), Asia (28%) or Barcelona (18%) : all these places are famous for their innovative architecture. The waterfront also made most people think of Sidney (Australia) (36%)

- Nobody linked the Titanic to Northern Ireland and the explanation about the new museum in Belfast allowed us to develop this part of Belfast history.

• Finally when the interviewees learnt allthe photos had been taken in Northern Ireland, 92% admitted at being surprised, the other 8 % thinking that as they had answered “correctly” for some photos they were not really surprised (even if they had mentioned Australia or Dubaï at some stage)

• Their image of Northern Ireland changed for the better and most of them (92%) now consider Northern Ireland as a possible holiday destination or would agree to extend a tour of Ireland to Northern Ireland.

SO WE CAN SAY WE HAVE MET OUR OBJECTIVES, FOR EXAMPLE, THE NUMBER OF VISITS TO OUR BLOG DOUBLED JUST AFTER OUT FIRST VISIT TO THE MEDIATHEQUE.

RESULTATS DU SONDAGE

Un total de 332 personnes ont été sondées dans notre lycée, nos anciens collèges et à la Médiathèque de Quimperlé. Aux photos 6,10,12,14 représentant des paysages magnifiques, l'université de Queens, une distillerie de whisky, 43% des réponses obtenues indiquent clairement la Grande Bretagne (Angleterre, Ecosse principalement mentionnées) et l'Irlande, mais seulement 1% des réponses indiquent l'Irlande du Nord..

Plus surprenant le fait que la Chaussée des Géants n'a été reconnue que par 4 personnes et seulement 2 savait qu'elle se trouvait en Irlande du Nord. On a même eu du mal à convaincre un adulte à la Médiathèque qu'il s'agissait d'un site naturel non fabriqué par l'homme. Personne ne savait que ce site était inscrit au Patrimoine Mondial de l'UNESCO.

Peu de gens ont une image moderne et dynamique de l'Irlande du Nord : les photos montrant des activités sportives furent le plus souvent associées à l'Australie, la Nouvelle Zélande, les USA (62% l'autre réponse mentionnée était la France : Guidel, La Torche). Quant à l'architecture ultra moderne du musée Titanic Belfast, la majorité des réponses l'ont située à Dubaï (52%), en Asie (28%) ou à Barcelone (28%) : tous ces endroits sont connus pour leurs nouvelles contructions futuristes. La photo du Concert Hall en bord de mer a souvent été attribuée à l'Australie (Sidney : 36%)

Personne ne connaissait le lien étroit qui unit le Titanic à l'Irlande du Nord et nous avons été amenés à donner de nombreuses explications sur le sujet en commentant la photo du nouveau musée.

Finalement 92% des gens ont reconnu avoir été surpris d'apprendre que TOUTES les photos avaient été prises en Irlande du Nord, les 8% restants estimant que puisqu'ils avaient “ bien” répondu à plusieurs photos, ils n'étaient pas vraiment surpris (même si leurs réponses avaient inclus Dubaï ou l'Australie à un moment quelconque).

L'image qu'ils se font de l'Irlande du Nord a changé pour le mieux ( celle d'un vieux pays industriel, froid et pluvieux) et 92% indiquent qu'ils pensent maintenant à l'Irlande du Nord comme destination touristique possible ou accepteraient de l'intégrer à un circuit en Irlande s'ils en ont la possibilité.

Bravo pour votre diaporama aussi varié qu'instructif, en effet je n'aurais jamais pensé que tout ces photos de paysages magnifiques et de curiosités puissent être prise dans un seul pays et encore moins l'Irlande du Nord qui est un pays, vous avez raison de l'affirmer, encore très méconnu du grand public. Je vous souhaite de tout coeur de participer à ce voyage, ce que je pense vous espérez tous, et vous dis encore une fois bravo pour votre travail remarquable qui m'a fait découvrir les merveilles de l'Irlande du Nord, qui va être je le pense ma prochaine destination de vacances. Un petit mot aussi pour souligner la qualité des petits film mettant en scène l'histoire du Titanic, des acteurs a en devenir.

J'ai trouvé le diaporama très varié, alternant images de nature et de culture.La plupart des sites m'étaient inconnus; pourtant, je suis assez curieuse...C'est original d'avoir montré un pub de l'extérieur,et non de l'intérieur pour vanter la convivialité,ce qui aurait fait vraiment trop cliché!Je ne suis jamais allée en Irlande du Nord et votre agréable vidéo m'a donné envie d'y aller.
